The Cotton Arbitration and Testing General Organization (CATGO) was established under Presidential Decree No. 1105 of 1965 as a neutral technical authority currently affiliated with the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade. Its primary mandate is to safeguard the superior quality of Egyptian cotton—renowned globally for its exceptional natural and spinning characteristics—by preventing any form of mixing, fraud, or contamination across all stages of handling and trade.
CATGO oversees every phase of Egyptian cotton circulation, from rural collection centers to delivery to local spinning mills or export markets, ensuring purity, consistency, and compliance with national regulations including Law 106/1973 and Law 75/2007. The organization provides comprehensive technical services to all stakeholders involved in seed cotton and lint cotton operations, issuing accredited certificates for technological property testing, moisture testing, and expert grading.
Its operational structure includes several specialized sectors: the Internal Classification and Arbitration Sector, the Sworn Experts Sector, the Moisture Testing Sector, the Yarn and Fiber Testing Sector, the International Training Center, and the Information and Documentation Center—all contributing to strengthening the global competitiveness of Egyptian cotton.
